The second of two tours exploring The Regent’s Park and Primrose Hill in literature and the lives of writers. Starting outside the Royal College of Physicians, we discover how many wordsmiths throughout history have also been doctors, from the author of the original vampire story to the creator of Sherlock Holmes.
Following a route through the southerly part of the Park, we learn how this oasis of green has been a place of solace and inspiration for many female writers from Mary Shelly and Elizabeth Bowen to Fanny Burney and Virginia Woolf. We will never be too far from two of the great men of literature, as Marylebone was Dickens’s home for years and Shakespeare’s works inspired the establishment of Britain’s longest operating open-air theatre.
